Tagari Garden Farm ~ Permaculture Institute FARM LABOUR POSITION Commencing September 2026 The 88 days requirement can be fulfilled with us. Thank you for your interest in working with us. We are seeking a reliable, physically fit and self-motivated person(s) to assist with restoring and preparing our vegetable-growing operation and, potentially, other areas of the property for the coming spring growing season. This is a practical, hands-on position suited to an all-rounder who enjoys working outdoors, is comfortable with physical work and can work independently once tasks and priorities have been explained. Hours of Work • Monday to Thursday: 7.5 hours per day • Friday: 4 hours • Total: 34 hours per week • Standard working hours: 8:30 am to 4:30 pm • Includes a morning tea break of approximately 15 minutes around 11:00 am and a 30-minute lunch break around 1:30–2:00 pm • Start times and/or days worked may vary by mutual agreement • This work schedule counts as 7 visa days per week Employment Conditions • Casual employment • 32.18 per hour, including 25% casual loading on the base rate of 25.74 per hour • Superannuation is paid in addition to the hourly rate • Classification: Outdoor Vegetable Growing – Level 1 Casual About the Position Our vegetable-growing operation has been offline while other areas of the business have taken priority. The initial focus of this position will be restoring, preparing and maintaining the gardens, orchards, livestock areas, buildings and infrastructure so that the property is ready for the coming growing season. Typical duties include: • Removing old crops and unwanted vegetation • Weeding and preparing garden beds • Improving and preparing soils • Digging and moving compost, mulch and other materials • Applying compost and organic soil amendments • Planting perennial food plants • Brush cutting and mowing • Compost management • Fence maintenance • Irrigation maintenance • Caring for animals and poultry • Cleaning, organising and decluttering sheds and work areas • General farm and property maintenance • Preparing areas for ongoing farm activities The position is physically demanding and requires strength, stamina and a willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Equipment and Farm Facilities There are many different areas requiring regular care and maintenance, including: • Large hothouse • Hoop houses • Small nursery • Shipping container • Chicken areas • Stable • Workshops • Warehouse • Storage sheds Brush cutting is a significant part of the work. Previous experience operating a brush cutter is preferred, although training can be provided. You will also be expected to learn the correct cleaning and basic maintenance of the equipment. Composting is an important part of the farm system. Regular tasks include transporting manure, plant material and other organic matter to the composting area. We do not use chemical herbicides or pesticides, so you will not be exposed to agricultural chemicals as part of this work. A Typical Working Week The exact work will vary according to weather, seasonal requirements and farm priorities. The following provides an indication of how the week may be structured. The Job Suits an All-Rounder No two days are necessarily the same. One day you may be walking behind a small tiller preparing seed beds, applying soil amendments, raking and seeding areas for the chickens' pasture. Another day might involve: • Moving and organising boxes and equipment in sheds • Fencing • Installing and maintaining drip irrigation • Mixing several cubic metres of potting mix • Weeding and mulching • Painting • Small building and repair projects • Brush cutting • Planting trees • Fruit and nut tree maintenance • Pressure washing equipment, buildings and walkways • Tool repair and basic equipment maintenance • General shed and workshop work If you have the appropriate experience and can safely operate machinery, there may also be opportunities for: • Dragging fallen trees with the tractor • Small earthworks using a 3.5-tonne excavator • Other machinery-related tasks • Building repairs and maintenance Machinery experience is an advantage but is not required. You will only operate machinery for which you are suitably experienced and trained. On days of heavy rain, when outdoor work is impractical, there is work available in the hothouse, warehouse, workshops and sheds. We generally continue working outdoors in light rain, so good wet-weather clothing is important. We recommend wet-weather gear designed for the dairy industry, as it tends to be durable and suitable for this type of work. Working Independently Approximately half of your working time will be unsupervised. Each Monday morning, we will meet to review the week's priorities. You will receive a list or chart of jobs to complete, together with instructions and discussion about priorities. During the day, you will generally work independently with intermittent supervision. You should be able to: • Follow instructions carefully • Ask questions whenever something is unclear • Contact your supervisor when you need clarification or assistance • Work safely and efficiently without constant supervision • Stay motivated and productive while working independently • Maintain a consistent standard of work • Be reliable and punctual • Take responsibility for completing assigned tasks You will complete your own weekly timesheet and submit it each Friday at the end of the working day. Trial Period The first two weeks will serve as a trial period to ensure that the position is a good fit for both you and us. Continued employment will depend on your ability to: • Work safely and efficiently • Follow directions • Maintain a steady and appropriate work pace • Work independently when required • Respect the property, its residents and the animals living here • Accurately record your working hours • Observe allocated break times • Maintain a reliable and consistent standard of work If either party feels that the position is not the right fit during the trial period, employment may be concluded. Safety A workplace safety induction is required before commencing work. You provide: • Safety-toe work boots • Work gloves • Sun hat • Water bottle • Sturdy outdoor work clothing • Wet-weather clothing, including waterproof pants, coat and hat • Gumboots are optional but recommended We provide: • High-visibility vest • Safety glasses • Brush-cutter protective chaps • Hearing protection • Hard hat Optional On-Site Accommodation Simple on-site accommodation is available if required. The accommodation is clean, older caravans without mains electricity. Shared facilities include: • Camp kitchen • Refrigerator/freezer • Cooking facilities • Washing machine • Wi-Fi • Hot-water outdoor showers • Clean, rustic composting toilets LPG for cooking is supplied by you. Skills and Experience Previous experience with the tasks described in this position is preferred, particularly experience in: • Outdoor work • Gardening • Farming • Landscaping • Composting • Plant care • Equipment operation • Property maintenance • Basic building or repair work However, a willingness to learn, a strong work ethic, reliability and the ability to work safely and independently are equally important. Training and guidance will be provided where required, including familiarisation with site-specific practices, equipment and safety procedures.
