About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Retail Manager to oversee the day-to-day operations of our supermarket, including the grocery, fresh produce, and butcher departments. The successful applicant will be responsible for managing store operations, supervising staff, maintaining inventory levels, ensuring excellent customer service, and achieving sales and profitability targets while ensuring compliance with all relevant retail, food safety, and workplace health and safety regulations.
Key Responsibilities
Store Operations
Manage and coordinate the daily operations of the supermarket, including the grocery, fresh produce, and butcher departments.
Ensure shelves, refrigerated displays, and fresh meat displays are fully stocked, attractively presented, and maintained to a high standard.
Monitor store performance and implement strategies to improve operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.
Ensure all departments operate efficiently to meet customer demand.
Staff Management
Recruit, train, supervise, and motivate supermarket employees across all departments.
Prepare and manage staff rosters to ensure adequate staffing during trading hours.
Monitor employee performance and provide coaching and ongoing development.
Promote a positive, productive, and customer-focused workplace culture.
Customer Service
Maintain a high standard of customer service throughout the supermarket.
Respond to customer enquiries, special meat orders, and product requests professionally and efficiently.
Resolve customer complaints promptly to ensure customer satisfaction.
Build strong relationships with customers to encourage repeat business and customer loyalty.
Inventory and Stock Control
Monitor inventory levels and ensure adequate stock of grocery products, fresh produce, dairy products, frozen goods, beverages, household items, and fresh meat products.
Coordinate purchasing and ordering of supermarket merchandise and fresh meat supplies.
Conduct regular stocktakes and investigate inventory discrepancies.
Minimise stock loss through effective stock rotation, waste control, and loss prevention procedures.
Liaise with suppliers to ensure timely deliveries, product quality, and competitive pricing.
Fresh Meat and Butcher Department
Oversee the daily operation of the butcher department to ensure fresh meat products are available, well presented, and meet customer expectations.
Monitor the storage, handling, and display of fresh meat products to ensure compliance with food safety regulations.
Coordinate with butcher staff to maintain product quality, stock availability, and efficient workflow.
Ensure correct pricing, labelling, and rotation of fresh meat products.
Financial Management
Monitor daily sales, gross profit margins, and operating costs across all departments.
Prepare sales and operational reports for management.
Oversee cash handling procedures, banking, and daily reconciliations.
Assist in achieving sales targets and profitability objectives.
Merchandising and Marketing
Plan and maintain attractive product displays and promotional activities throughout the supermarket.
Ensure pricing, signage, and promotional materials are accurate and up to date.
Monitor customer buying trends and competitor activities.
Assist in developing promotional campaigns to increase sales and customer engagement.
Compliance and Safety
Ensure compliance with food safety regulations, workplace health and safety legislation, and retail industry standards.
Maintain high standards of hygiene, sanitation, and food handling practices, particularly within the butcher and fresh food departments.
Conduct regular workplace safety inspections and promptly address identified hazards.
Ensure compliance with company policies and procedures.
Business Improvement
Work closely with the business owners to improve operational performance and customer satisfaction.
Analyse sales data, stock movement, shrinkage, and business performance to identify growth opportunities.
Recommend and implement strategies to improve productivity, profitability, and the overall customer shopping experience.
Essential Requirements
Minimum 1–2 years' experience as a Retail Manager or in a similar supermarket or grocery management role.
Experience managing fresh food departments, including a butcher or meat department, will be highly regarded.
Relevant qualification in Retail Management, Business, Management, or equivalent industry experience.
Strong leadership and people management skills.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Experience in inventory management, merchandising, and supplier coordination.
Sound understanding of retail operations and customer service.
Strong organisational, planning, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work in a fast-paced retail environment.
Knowledge of workplace health and safety and food safety requirements.
